FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BRISBANE MAIN ROAD FAR EXCEEDS STATE NOISE LIMITS.

Brisbane Date 1 June 2002

The Rivermouth Action Group Inc Chairperson, Mr Barry Wilson, said today, "Noise level testing this week along Mt Gravatt Capalaba Road at Wishart by The Rivermouth Action Group Inc has resulted in obtaining noise level readings which were five times the Queensland Transport noise level standard."

"The Queensland Transport's Main Road noise level Standard is 68dB L10 18 Hour. That is simply for no more that 10% of 18 hours the traffic noise would exceed 68 dB between 6 am and midnight."

Mr Wilson said, "Noise level reading taken this week showed that between 6 am and midnight the noise level exceeded the 68 dB level not the 10% as per the Queensland Transport Standards but 50% of the time. The L10 18 Hour reading was 76.2 dB."

"A senior Queensland Transport staff member has refused twice to release any data to community groups of such investigations which is being prepared for the Brisbane Urban Corridor study at Mt Gravatt and adjacent suburbs so our Group is taking their own noise level readings." said Mr Wilson justifying his Group's reason for taking noise level readings

Mr Wilson said, "Our Group's noise level testing has proved that many of the residents are already experiencing excessive noise levels along this major transportation corridor which would have warranted tall noise barriers in front of most homes long ago."

The Rivermouth Action Group believes that much of this present noise level could be reduced simply by forcing all heavy transport vehicles to use the Logan Motorway where appropriate.

Mr Wilson concluded by saying, "Interstate and intrastate transport drivers and companies are saving the cost of Logan Motorway's tolls at the expense of the Health and well being of hundreds if not thousands of residents along the Brisbane Urban Corridor with full and continuing approval of the Queensland (the so called "Smart State") Government.
