Dear Webmaster

I refer to your web page entitled “Queensland Government Shame File” and your concerns about vehicle car alarms.

I have obtained advice on this matter from the Assistant Commissioner, Operations Support Command, Queensland Police Service.

The Assistant Commissioner has informed me that currently there is no legislation that allows the Queensland Police Service to take action when a vehicle alarm system is operating. Section 224 of the Transport Operations (Road Use Management – Road Rules) Regulation 1999 provides the usage requirements of horns and warning devices fitted to vehicles.  This section also provides an exemption from the provisions if the horn or warning device is being used as part of an anti-theft device.

However, in light of the concerns raised by you, I have instructed that the matter of noise emanating from vehicle alarm systems be considered as part of a review of the operation of the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000 now being conducted.

I trust this information is of assistance.

Yours sincerely
