Tower safe, says Optus
OPTUS planners have reassured Brighton residents a proposed 25m mobile phone tower would be perfectly safe.
Residents have held two public rallies at Brighton's Decker Park to voice their opposition to the tower but Optus representatives have not attended either.
Rally organiser Carol Parkinson said a petition was being circulated and it was expected several hundred people would sign.
Optus community relations manager Ross Monoghan said company representatives would set a date this week to meet with Brisbane City Council and concerned residents.
"The appropriate way to discuss this issue is to have a formal meeting with council and some residents," Mr Monoghan said.
"We're still happy to sit down with council and resolve this issue but moving the tower would be a last resort."
Mr Monoghan said Optus had followed council's development application process to the letter.
He said the tower would operate on "very, very low" power and the field strength would be 2.463 micro watts per square centimetre at the nearest public access point. This was well below the Australian Standard of 200 micro watts.
Mrs Parkinson said the major worry was the tower's proximity to schools and houses.
