Save our flora and fauna!

WE WISH to add our voices to the growing tide of protest about the scale of development in Redland Shire.

There seems to be a very laissez faire attitude to preserving our flora and fauna and large are felled with no thought to the effect on bird and animal life or indeed the visual pollution that occurs subsequently.

The developments in Birkdale near our residence are a case in point.

Mature trees chopped down by unthinking or uncaring builders are later 'replaced' by small trees that will never replace the ones we have lost.

This is not only costly but also stupid.

It takes many, many years to create a mature tree. We lose them in minutes.

On a similar issue, we have a so-called Koala Corridor near us, but this is patently too narrow and is being encroached on all sides.

There are certainly koalas present at the moment but they won't be there long, I can assure you of that.

We have several lovely pieces of bushland nearby. One in particular joins onto Judy Holt Park.

There are teenagers building trail-bike tracks in this bushland by digging up the track and making jumps for their bikes - again not very healthy for wildlife.

I would have little complaint about BMX bikes but these are motorized trail bikes that not only make a huge amount of noise but also have on several occasions come close to hitting us when out running in the bush.

I guess that nothing will be done about these issues unless people like us, i.e. the ratepayers continue to agitate for change.

-Dave and Sue Boardman, Birkdale.
