The RACQ says it is disappointed Australia is yet to match worldwide fuel standards.

The Federal Government has announced it will reduce the level of sulphur in unleaded and diesel fuels by 2009.

The Government says the initiative will eliminate up to 320,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emmissions.

RACQ spokeman Ken Willett says Australia still needs to tighten fuel standards.

"We've been lagging the world's best practice, European practice, United States practice for a number of years and in 2008 we'll still be lagging European best practice by three years," he said.

However the trucking industry has welcomed the move and Peter Garske from the Queensland Trucking Association says it is not unexpected.

"The environmental outcomes that the Minister's announcement will achieve are outcomes that my industry has been working towards for some time," he said.
