Glider habitat questions unanswered

THE destruction of the squirrel glider habitat in Boondall was a significant topic for discussion at the April meeting of the Petrie branch of the Australian Democrats.

Many questions arose out of our discussion and most of them remain unanswered, despite research carried out since the meeting. We would like to know:

What happens to the squirrel gliders as the trees are felled and subsequent to the felling?

Has the RSPCA or a similar organisation been consulted regarding the supervision of the "removal" in order to ensure that all actions are humane?

How much notice was given to the public, and in what form, of the proposed development and its ramifications for this colony?

Why is the council unable/unwilling to provide details of the ecological survey done at the site?

As residents, we pay a Green Levy to the council: is this not a Green Levy issue?

What consideration has been given to relocating these animals to an appropriate area? Yes, we know that this will take time, but we believe it to be worth taking some time.

There are volunteer groups who could be interested in help in the relocation which can help keep the costs to a minimum, and surely we can find some Green Levy to pay for this.
